Lawyers Are Standing By

Were You Injured in One of These Accidents?

  • Car Accidents are a concern along the routes through Bessemer. Traffic on Poland Avenue, Main Street, and the roads connecting to PA Route 18 creates regular collision risks. We handle rear-end crashes, intersection collisions, hit-and-run cases, and distracted driving claims.
  • Truck Accidents occur on the commercial corridors serving the area’s industrial facilities. The former cement plant and quarry operations generated heavy truck traffic for decades, and commercial vehicles continue to use local roads. Crashes involving large trucks often result in catastrophic injuries.
  • Medical Malpractice claims arise when healthcare providers fail to meet the standard of care. Bessemer residents typically receive care at UPMC Jameson in New Castle. Errors in diagnosis, treatment, or surgery can have lasting consequences for patients and their families.
  • Workers’ Compensation benefits are available to employees injured on the job. Bessemer’s industrial heritage means many residents have worked in manufacturing, cement production, and quarry operations. If you were hurt at work, you deserve benefits for your medical care and lost wages.
  • Motorcycle Accidents result in serious injuries on the rural roads of northeastern Lawrence County. The scenic routes through farm country attract riders, but encounters with work trucks and agricultural equipment create hazards. We fight for full compensation for injured motorcyclists.
  • Wrongful Death claims allow families to seek compensation when negligence causes a loved one’s death. Whether the loss resulted from a traffic accident, workplace incident, or medical error, our attorneys help families navigate this difficult process.

Why Accidents Happen in Bessemer

Bessemer sits in northeastern Lawrence County, approximately 8 miles northeast of New Castle. The borough developed around limestone quarrying operations and served as a center for cement and brick production throughout the 20th century.

Poland Avenue and Main Street form the primary routes through the borough, connecting residential areas to commercial facilities and neighboring communities. The roads leading to PA Route 18 carry commuter traffic to and from New Castle and points beyond. Local streets were originally laid out to serve the needs of the limestone and cement industries.

The quarry lakes that surround the borough – remnants of decades of limestone extraction – create unique geographic features that influence road patterns. Traffic through the borough includes residents, industrial vehicles serving remaining operations, and commuters using local roads as shortcuts to regional highways.

The Mohawk Area School District, headquartered at 351 Mohawk School Road in Bessemer, generates morning and afternoon traffic during the school year. Bessemer Community Park provides recreational space and sees activity throughout the warmer months.

Medical Care After a Bessemer Accident

UPMC Jameson, located at 1211 Wilmington Avenue in New Castle, serves as the primary hospital for Bessemer residents. The full-service community hospital is approximately 8 miles southwest of the borough and provides emergency services, surgical care, and diagnostic imaging.

For severe trauma requiring specialized care, patients may be transported to UPMC Presbyterian or Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. These Level I trauma centers are approximately 50 miles from Bessemer.

Accident injuries often require treatment beyond the initial emergency room visit. Physical therapy, specialist consultations, and ongoing medical care can continue for months or years. Our attorneys account for both current and future medical costs when calculating your claim’s full value.

Built on Limestone and Steel

Bessemer’s history began in the late 1790s when Scots-Irish and German settlers established farms in what would become the northwestern corner of North Beaver Township. The discovery of rich limestone deposits in 1887 transformed the quiet crossroads into a booming industrial community.

The borough takes its name from Sir Henry Bessemer, the English inventor of the Bessemer process for purifying steel. Local limestone was used to line the Bessemer converters in Youngstown’s steel mills. The Bessemer Limestone Company brought immigrant workers from Sweden, Austria, Finland, Croatia, and Italy to extract the valuable mineral.

By 1913, Bessemer had incorporated as a borough with nearly 2,000 residents. The Bessemer Cement Company (later Essroc) operated until 2009, and two brick kilns once dotted the landscape. Railroad spurs from the Pennsylvania Railroad and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad hauled materials in and out. Though the cement plant has closed, the community maintains its identity and the strong work ethic of its founders.
