New Beaver Borough was originally part of Big Beaver Township, which was formed in 1802 when South Beaver Township was divided. When Lawrence County was created in 1849, the new county line split Big Beaver, leaving a township of that name in each county. The portion in Lawrence County eventually became New Beaver Borough.
The borough’s history is tied to the development of the transportation corridors through southern Lawrence County. The Beaver River valley provided natural routes for early roads and later railroads. These transportation connections supported industrial development and population growth.
Today, New Beaver maintains its small-town character as a community of fewer than 2,000 residents. The borough is served by the Mohawk Area School District, which brings together students from several communities in southern Lawrence County.
