Lawyers Are Standing By

Were You Injured in One of These Accidents?

  • Car Accidents occur regularly in Volant, where tourist traffic mixes with local residents and Amish buggies on PA Route 208 (Main Street). The bridge over Neshannock Creek and the intersection with PA Route 168 see congestion during peak shopping seasons. We handle rear-end crashes, intersection collisions, and accidents involving buggies.
  • Truck Accidents happen on the rural highways surrounding the borough. Commercial vehicles traveling between I-79 and points west use PA Route 208, encountering slower traffic in the village center. These crashes often result in serious injuries to occupants of smaller vehicles.
  • Medical Malpractice claims arise when healthcare providers fail to meet the standard of care. Volant residents typically receive care at UPMC Jameson in New Castle or Grove City Medical Center. Errors in diagnosis, treatment, or surgery can have lasting effects on patients.
  • Workers’ Compensation benefits are available to employees injured on the job. Many Volant residents work in the tourism industry, at local shops, or on nearby farms. If you were hurt at work, you deserve benefits for your medical care and lost wages.
  • Motorcycle Accidents result in serious injuries on the scenic roads through Amish country. The rolling hills and winding routes attract riders from across the region, but encounters with slow-moving buggies and inattentive tourists create hazards. We fight for full compensation for injured motorcyclists.
  • Wrongful Death claims allow families to seek compensation when negligence causes a loved one’s death. Whether the loss resulted from a traffic accident, workplace incident, or medical error, our attorneys help families through this difficult process.

Why Accidents Happen in Volant

Volant sits in northern Lawrence County along Neshannock Creek, approximately 10 minutes from both Interstate 79 and Interstate 80. The small borough has transformed from a 19th-century mill town into a popular tourist destination, with its Main Street lined with specialty shops, antique stores, and restaurants.

PA Route 208 runs through the center of Volant as Main Street, descending toward the Neshannock Creek bridge before continuing east toward I-79 at Leesburg. PA Route 168 intersects Route 208 on the east side of the borough, heading south toward New Castle. The combination of tourist traffic, local residents, and Amish buggies creates a challenging driving environment.

The narrow Main Street through the shopping district sees heavy pedestrian traffic, particularly on weekends and during seasonal events like the Sunflower & Pumpkin Fest and Christmas Cookie Crawl. Parking areas overflow during peak times, with visitors walking along the roadway. The historic Volant Mills building and the various shops along both sides of the street generate constant foot traffic.

Neshannock Creek, which runs through the borough, is designated a Keystone Select Water and attracts fly fishermen to the area. The nature trail along the creek adds pedestrian activity near the parking areas at the end of town.

Medical Care After a Volant Accident

UPMC Jameson, located at 1211 Wilmington Avenue in New Castle, is approximately 15 miles south of Volant. The full-service community hospital provides emergency services, surgical care, and diagnostic imaging for accident victims.

Grove City Medical Center, part of the AHN network, is located approximately 10 miles to the northeast and provides additional emergency services for the area. For severe trauma requiring specialized care, patients may be transported to Pittsburgh hospitals roughly 60 miles to the south.

Accident injuries often require ongoing treatment after initial emergency care. Physical therapy, specialist visits, and rehabilitation can continue for extended periods. Our attorneys account for both current and future medical costs when calculating the full value of your claim.

A Village With a Colorful History

The land where Volant now sits was purchased from Native Americans in 1784. The first gristmill on Neshannock Creek was built in 1806, and a replacement mill followed in 1812. In 1847, an Amish settlement was established between New Wilmington and Volant, creating the community that still surrounds the borough today.

The name “Volant” came about in 1874 when hunters exclaimed the Latin word—meaning “they fly”—as ducks took flight from a local pond. J.P. Locke had purchased the mill and 100 acres in 1868 and began developing the settlement he initially called Lockeville. The railroad helped the community grow, and in 1893, residents officially incorporated as Volant.

Today, the historic Volant Mills building anchors a shopping district that includes over 20 specialty shops. The Neshannock Creek Fly Shop has operated for more than 30 years, serving anglers who come for the excellent trout fishing. Local businesses include Knockin’ Noggin Cidery, Derailed Distillery, and numerous antique and craft stores that draw visitors from across the region.
