Parents who are having babies in Pennsylvania may be going through various different emotions, but generally there is excitement. There may also be nerves as well, but most parents are not thinking about all the things that could go wrong with the birth. They may have been told about some of the possibilities, but most people do not think that those things will happen to them. So, when things do go wrong and their baby is not completely healthy, it can be very devastating for the parents.

There are generally two types of problems that can arise with the birth of a child. One is birth injuries and the other is birth defects. Birth injuries occur as the baby is being delivered. This could be because something was not quite right and the doctors tried different techniques or used certain equipment to get the baby out and injured the baby in the process.

Birth defects are things that went wrong during the pregnancy, not usually during the delivery. This could be caused by a medication the mother was taking during pregnancy or something they were exposed to. Some defects are also genetic and are not due to anything the mother did during the pregnancy. Some of the defects can be detected or prevented, but some others cannot.

Birth injuries and defects are relatively uncommon, but when they occur, the effects can last a lifetime and result in many extra costs for the parents. While in many situations there was nothing that could be done to prevent the injury or defect, many other times the doctors made mistakes and the parents may want to pursue compensation through a medical malpractice lawsuit.
