Being involved in a hit and run accident is one of the most frightening things that can happen on the road. According to USA Today, though, fatal instances have risen by 13.7 percent over the course of three years. Whether it is a minor fender bender or a major collision, a runaway driver further complicates a situation that is already difficult. If you have been involved in a hit and run accident, you should resist the urge to panic and instead follow these four essential steps.

1. Document details to the best of your ability

In the wake of an accident, it may be difficult to recall specific details after the fact. This is why it’s essential to record details as soon as possible after the event while they are still fresh in your mind. You should try to make note of the license plate of the car that hit you as well as its make, model and color. These details will likely be important in finding the culprit of the crime.

2. Call law enforcement and an ambulance

Of equal importance is calling law enforcement and getting medical treatment. Call 911 as soon as you are safely able to do so, and request an ambulance, too, even if you do not initially feel any injury. Adrenaline from the shock of the crash is liable to mask pain and other symptoms that will become evident later, so it is a good idea to accept medical treatment regardless of how well you may feel.

3. See if there are any witnesses who will provide a report

The best asset to your case will be the presence of a witness who will confirm your account of the accident. You should see if anybody has stopped who will be able to give a statement to law enforcement and provide any additional details.

4. Reach out to your insurance company

After you have tended to all immediate concerns of a hit and run, you should reach out to your insurance company to give them your statement and provide them with all of the details necessary to file a claim. Your insurance company m ay work in conjunction with law enforcement in an attempt to find the culprit, so it is important to give them all of the details you recorded at the time of the accident.

These are just a few of the most important steps to take after a hit and run. You should also contact an attorney if you want to explore your legal options after an accident.
