Pennsylvania workers have the right to a reasonable expectation of safety in their workplaces. This is true for the men and women who work in high-risk jobs that may come with exposure to certain potentially dangerous things, such as silica dust. Workplace safety should be a priority for every employer, and this includes taking steps to reduce the chance of toxic exposure.

When inhaled, silica dust can lead to various types of dangerous illnesses. These particles can cause serious health implications, including kidney disease, lung disease, liver problems and even the development of some types of cancer. To reduce exposure and raise awareness about the risks of silica, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has put certain regulations in place that employers must follow.

In workplaces where workers could face exposure to silica dust, employers have to offer alternative methods when possible. They also have to train workers on how to stay safe and how to reduce contact with this toxic material when doing their jobs. OSHA also requires that they provide health screenings every three years to monitor the health of potentially exposed workers. Employers should also keep careful records of these health screenings and other documentation regarding silica exposure.

Workplace safety should be a priority in every Pennsylvania workplace, especially in places where there could be dangerous toxins that may threaten a worker’s health. If an employee does become ill due to his or her work environment, that individual can pursue financial support through a workers’ compensation claim. These benefits can help with medical bills, lost wages and other needs.
