Is Technology the Key to Reducing Car Accidents?

Distracted driving is one of the main reasons why motor vehicle accidents happen. From cellphone use to in-car technology, a number of things can take a driver’s attention away from the road and cause car accidents. Distraction is a problem on Pennsylvania roads, as well as everywhere else across the United States. Part of the solution may be found in certain types of technology.

Automakers are looking at ways to make vehicles safer and capable of assisting drivers in case they become distracted. At some point, these features may come as standard features in newer vehicles, hopefully contributing to fewer distraction-related accidents. Some of this technology relates to lane assistance and lane departure alerts. This would alert a driver when he or she swerves, drifts, comes too close to the edge of the lane or crosses the centerline.

Some cars may come with driver monitoring systems. These systems will use facial recognition to determine when someone behind the wheel is fatigued or distracted. The system will then alert the driver, hopefully bringing his or her attention back.

Regardless of the tools a Pennsylvania driver has at his or her disposal or the features included in a vehicle, each person behind the wheel is still responsible for the choices made that cause harm to others. Victims of distracted driving car accidents may have grounds to pursue compensation through a personal injury claim. After a crash, a victim and family may find it beneficial to learn more about the options for legal recourse available to them.
